Day 11 Friday 20th August 2010
Today we made a start on sorting out the contents of this house. When you buy a house this way you are buying the house only. Anything in the house remains the property of the debtor. You have to be a bit careful how you handle this so I figured that the best thing to do would be to put everything in to boxes and move all the furniture into one room until the owners come by and uplift it. So we spend the whole day opening drawers and cupboards and transferring the stuff to boxes and labelling everything.
These people have lived here since the house was built about 15 years ago. In that time they have accumulated lots of stuff and it seems they never threw anything away. There are 4 electric frying pans…with the boxes they once came in still here too. There are hundreds of books and children’s school assignments and homework from years ago. Given the high cost of dumping anything it’s not really surprising though.
We drove down to Osaka tonight to visit a Japanese friend and had dinner with his family. It’s noticeably hotter there.
On the way back to the Kameoka apartment we stopped by the house. This is the first time we’ve been there after dark and we discovered an unforeseen consequence in creating our Zen garden. There is a street light directly in front of the house which shines down directly on our garden.
The bulb in this light is white, not orange like we have at home.
When it gets dark and the street light kicks on, the light is reflected off the white pebbles and the whole house is bathed in this eerie white glow.
It really looks like a haunted horror movie set.
We're quite thrilled with this result.
